According to the Job-Stress-Index 2022 report by Promotion Santé Suisse, carried out in collaboration with University of Bern and the ZHAW Zürcher Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften: the proportion of active people located in the critical zone of professional stress is 28.2% in 2022.

We would like to share with you the key elements of this report, because it is in this sense that at MAES Conseils we are committed to supporting our clients.

The 2022 sample is made up of 3,022 active people aged between 16 and 65, from French-speaking, German-speaking and Italian Switzerland.

The share of active people feeling emotionally exhausted exceeds the bar for the first time since 2014

30%, with a rate of 30.3%. Professional stress costs the economy nearly CHF 6.5 billion.

Stress at work represents a major challenge, both for individuals and for companies. Stress generally means an imbalance between the constraints a person faces and the means they have to cope with them (resources). The constraints of the professional context can be time pressure, conflicts, or overwork. Certain working conditions can alleviate these constraints and thus represent resources for staff. This concerns, for example, the room for maneuver available or the recognition obtained.

The four indicators collected are linked: the results show a correlation between the strain-resource ratio at work (expressed by the Job Stress Index) and different aspects of health, such as emotional exhaustion. People whose Job Stress Index is in the critical zone may obtain more negative values on these aspects. When health status is reduced, the work performed by staff members may suffer; they will be absent more often for medical reasons (absenteeism) or will be present but less efficient (presenteeism). Both aspects lead to a loss of productivity. The economic potential arises from this loss of productivity: it describes the amount that the Swiss economy could save, if the loss of productivity generated by professional stress was avoided thanks to a balance between constraints and resources.

People experiencing more constraints than resources report lower job satisfaction and say they are less emotionally connected to their company. The intention to resign also increases. Active people with an unfavorable Job Stress Index express more irritation, meaning they have, for example, more difficulty switching off in the evening. Psychosomatic symptoms,

Sleep problems and poorer general health are also significantly correlated with the Job Stress Index.
